Privacy policy

We keep as little as we can, we never sell data, and there are no advertising networks in the app.
What we store
- An account. Trellis requires an account, so we store the email address you sign in with. We do not store your name.
- Your study data. Plans, progress, streaks, highlights, bookmarks, notes, and the questions you ask, so they back up and sync across your devices. What you type when you ask a question, describe the plan you want, or search by meaning — and the passage a question is about — is sent to OpenAI to produce the answer, and is not used to train its models. Your notes are never sent.
- Your settings. Translation, reminder time, scripture size and theme.
- Subscription status. Whether you have Premium, kept in step with the store through RevenueCat. We never see your payment details.
- How the app is used. A short list of named moments — a share sheet opened, the paywall seen, a plan created, a day marked done, a question sent — tied to your account, along with the basic technical details our analytics records by default: your app version, device model and operating system, and your language and time zone. Never the words you read, highlight, write, search or ask, never your location, and no recording of the screen.
What we do not do
- No advertising or ad tracking SDKs.
- No crash reporting, no session recording, no autocaptured taps or screens.
- No selling or sharing of personal data with third parties for their own purposes.
- No reading of your notes by people, except at your request for support.
Who we share data with
We share only what a part of the app cannot work without:
- Supabase, which hosts our servers and stores your account and study data on our behalf.
- OpenAI, which receives a passage, your question, what you write when you ask for a plan, or what you type into a search by meaning, in order to generate an explanation, an answer, or a set of results. It does not use any of it to train its models.
- RevenueCat, which manages subscriptions between the app and the stores. It receives your account's identifier and your subscription status, whether or not you ever buy anything, and never your payment details.
- The App Store and Google Play, which handle your subscription and tell us only whether it is active. Their handling of your purchase is covered by the terms of use.
- PostHog, an analytics provider hosted in the United States, which stores the usage moments above so we can see which parts of the app are used.
Each of these acts on our instructions and may not use your data for their own purposes. We may also disclose data if the law requires it, and if Trellis is ever sold or transferred your data would move with it, under this same policy.
Where data lives
Your data is stored on your device and, once signed in, on our servers. Reading, notes, and progress work fully offline and sync when you are back online.
Our servers and the providers above may be located outside the country you live in, so your data may be transferred and processed elsewhere. Where the law requires it, those transfers are covered by standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
Your account and study data are kept for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account it is removed straight away, and gone from our backups within 30 days. We keep records for longer only where the law requires it, for example billing records the stores pass to us.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Access is limited to the people who need it to run the service, and every row is protected so that one account cannot read another's. No system is completely secure, so we cannot promise absolute protection, but we will tell you without undue delay if a breach affects your data.
Your rights and choices
- Delete your account from Settings. This removes every row we hold for you, including the usage moments above.
- Turn reminders off in Settings or your phone's notification settings.
- Ask us for a copy of your data, for a correction, or for it to be deleted, by writing to support. We answer within 30 days.
- Object to how we process your data, or withdraw consent where we rely on it. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to receive your data in a portable form.
- Complain to your local data protection authority if you think we have handled your data badly. We would rather you told us first so we can put it right.
Children
Trellis is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their data.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. The date at the top always shows the current version.
